Sixth-generation florist David Kraft of Nanz & Kraft Florist here in Louisville, Kentucky took to the streets to spread cheer and make people’s days brighter. The shop has been a staple in the area since 1850.
On National Petal It Forward Day — when florists across the United States give out free flowers to members of their communities — Kraft spent hours handing out 500 sunflowers to passersby. The goal was to put a smile on as many faces as possible. “Giving flowers when you’re with people who are on the receiving end, they are just so happy and that’s kind of the point of today,” he explained. It’s Kraft’s eighth year of participating in National Petal It Forward Day.
Kraft gave out the sunflowers in pairs in order to spread happiness in an exponential fashion. “One for you and one to give to someone else to make their day brighter,” he continued, instructing one of the lucky recipients. Most were visibly touched by the gesture and appreciated the idea of spreading kindness and joy just because.
After finishing up, Kraft reflected on the occasion and deemed it a success. “We’ve had a lot of very happy people today,” he added. One resident, Anthony Springate Jr., shared how receiving flowers impacted him. “It is just really nice to come outside and get some sunflowers. I really appreciate them,” he revealed. “Now, my day is all brightened, and it’s just another great day to be in downtown Louisville.”
