Nanz and Kraft Florists asked one of our resident flower experts and moms to weigh in on kids, flowers and what to give the special moms in your life for Mother’s Day.
Name: Debbie Frisbie
Kids: Ellen, 28, Matthew, 25, Claire, 20, and John, 17
How did you get into floral work? I have always loved fresh flowers and usually have a bouquet somewhere in the house. I wanted to do something part-time with flexible hours. Nanz and Kraft was looking for seasonal help during the Christmas holiday, and I jumped at the chance to work with them. I have loved working with the flowers from day one and have found that it is not a job but a joy to be able to be creative and make beautiful arrangements every day.
What do you love most about working with flowers? I love that each piece is unique and that I know each will bring joy or comfort to the person receiving the arrangement.
Favorite flower? Hydrangea. You can do so much with them, and I love seeded eucalyptus also as an accent to a bouquet.
If you design, do you have a signature style? Are you known for any specific approach or preference?
I have an unstructured style. I don’t like matchy-matchy. Nature is not perfect, and I like my bouquets neat but never too uniform.
What do you love most about being a mom?
I love watching my kids support and interact with each other as young adults. It’s really fun to see how they have used their talents to become amazing young adults.
What do your kids think about what you do? Are they into flowers?
My kids think I have found my dream job. Two of the kids have worked at Nanz and Kraft, and we did the flowers for my daughter Ellen’s wedding. Ellen couldn’t have been more pleased to have a mom that worked in a flower store.
What flowers or flower design do moms really want for Mother’s Day, from your point of view? Speaking as both a mom and a flower expert? If you could pick one design from your selection to receive yourself, which would it be? Moms want something bright that makes them think of spring. We have so many excellent choices at Nanz and Kraft, but my favorite this Mother’s Day would be the Stephanie Lynn. I love the pink hydrangeas with the stunning garden roses. There are seven various flowers in a wonderful vase that would be a great gift by itself.
